How to create a linked index in OpenOffice

November 14th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

You can easily create a linked index in OpenOffice.org 3, once you have created your titles and chapters structure using the "Headers" formatting, you shall perform the following simple steps:

1. Select the place in your document where you want to insert the index, then go on Insert->Indexes and Tables->Indexes and Tables. A dialog box will appear

2. Select the Entries tab

3. The Structure fields specify for each heading level how the entry in the index shall be. Select the first editable text field, (normally before E#)

4. Click on the Hyperlink Button.

5. On the Character Style popup menu select the Page Number item

6. Select the last editable text field of Structure

7. Click on the Hyperlink Button.

8. On the Character Style popup menu select the Page Number item

9. To apply the linked index to each level header click on the All button.

That's all.

It's also possible to click between the different parts and thus create a more clean link.
For instance clicking before E# and then pressing hyperlink and then between E and T and pressing hyperlink.
This makes sure that only the chapter number and name are blue linked. You can also click on E#, E, T and # to remove it by pressing the delete key.
You can customize it pretty well
