It is possible to use a screensaver as background image in Mac OS X. Simply follow the following steps:

  • Set your screen saver to something cool
  • Open a new Terminal window
  • Type the following command:

# /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background

that's all, now your desktop will show your screensaver.

You can give a sense to this trick selecting a screensaver that gives you some information, for example you can use the RSS Visualizer or something like this.

Remeber that the screensaver could reduce drammatically the autonomy of your battery. Take care of this note…

To stop the execution of the screensaver go to the Terminal window and hit "CTRL-C"

I've tested this procedure on Snow Leopard.
