The new version of Ubuntu (Ubuntu 11.10 named Oneiric Ocelot) has been released. With the new features, I want to show you how it works in a VirtualBox Machine.

The release of Ubuntu 11.10 includes some clever enhancements to make your Ubuntu experience even more enjoyable. Take a look at what’s new and then feel free explore Ubuntu for yourself.

  • Ubuntu Software Centre
  • The launcher
  • The dash
  • Application switching

Ubuntu Software Centre

The Ubuntu Software Centre gives you instant access to thousands of apps. With the Ubuntu 11.10 redesign, you can see the top-rated apps, compare apps by rating and user reviews, keep track of what you’ve installed, and sync your apps between all your Ubuntu computers.

The launcher

It’s pretty hard to miss the launcher that sits on the left-hand side of your screen. It’s designed to make getting to your favourite tools and applications quick and easy. You can hide and reveal it, add and remove applications and bookmarks, and keep track of your open windows.

The dash

When you click on the Ubuntu logo in the top-left corner of the launcher, the new dash will appear. It’s another simple way to get to your shortcuts and search for other applications and programs. So you can get fast access to your email, music, pictures and much more. And you can search by type of app or file with our new filters menu.

Application switching

Ubuntu 11.10 gives you a really easy way to manage multiple windows and applications. You can use Alt + Tab and Alt + Grave to switch between applications or application windows. No more cramping multiple apps into a small space.

COME ON VIRTUALBOX

As usual, the installation is very simple so we can go ahead

The first great news is that the mouse integration works fine starting from the first installation window.

The new login window is very nice, more than in the previous releases of Ubuntu.

The Unity interface starts in few seconds.
After the login I've run the Update manager and it found several(149) updates….

Then I've had to restart the system (Windoze after the corner? :-<)

After the reboot I've installed the Additional drivers.

A new reboot is needed……………….

It's fantastic! After the installation of the additional drivers you don't need to install VirtualBox Addition. All is working fine! You can resize the VB window and Ubuntu will resize the desktop. Copy and Paste works fine from the host system to the guest system and viceversa.

Ubuntu 11.10 comes with a lot of pre installed software:

Libre Office
  • Calc
  • Impress
  • Math
  • Writer
  • Draw
  • Base is not installed by default so if you need it you shall perform a new installation.

Internet
  • As default browser Ubuntu 11.10 comes with Firefox 7.0.1
  • The default mail client is Thunderbird
  • For social networking it provides gwibber and empathy

Media
  • Banshee Media Player
  • Brasero Disc Burner
  • Movie Player
  • Sound recorder

It's really a good distribution for a virtual machine.
