Ubuntu on Acer AspireOne 110 – Part 1: Installation

Few days ago I bought the Acer AspireOne 110 netbook. It comes with Linpus installed, this operating system is a very limited operating system, so I decided to install another Linux distribution.
I tried the following Linux distributions:

  1. Moblin 2.0 beta
  2. Linux4One
  3. Ubuntu 8.10 umpc

I didn’t be able to install the first two choices. Instead, Ubuntu 8.10 umpc works fine on my Acer AspireOne.

If you want to install Ubuntu on your Acer AspireOne you can follow the following steps:

1. Download the image file from bittorrent

2. After the you have downloaded you shall put the image on a, at least one, GigaByte usb key using dd

sudo dd if=/tmp/ubuntu-umpc.img of=/dev/sdd bs=1024

3. Plug the usb key in one usb port and startup your AspireOne

4. Press F12 and select the usb key as boot disk.

5. When the system will be up, on the desktop, you will find the install icon, double-click it and follow the instructions.

6. After about 15 minutes the Ubuntu UMPC installation will finish.
